My group of friends were in a similar boat as yours so maybe I can provide some insight.
For gearing:
I think gear doesn't matter too much in earlier levels (100-160) from my experience. I crafted reverse gear but it becomes obsolete really quick. Leveling from 130 up to 160 and higher was much faster than expected, so you can pretty much skip right to timeless gear. I think what you can get in the meantime which will last up until sweetwater gear would be the chaos scarga/targa helm. Check the discord under free stuff tabs and the 1st post is a generous person who gives away these helms for free. You could just scroll a lvl 100-110 overall (mob drop eqs) and use that until timeless. As for weapon, you can stick to your lvl 100 maple weapon or craft a reverse and 60% it albeit it gets replaced fairly quickly. Gloves was stormcaster gloves scrolled with 60%, shoes were facestompers, and earrings were rex's earring from PQ points. Cape was a mixture of blackfist cloak, taru spirit cape, goldensoul cape depending on class and what we got for cheap.
At your level, that was the level when we did the +100 stats in our monster book so we can start to equip higher level equips which required secondary stats. It's super easy to do, just do the last 3 tabs in your monster book. That's a decent increase in overall strength.
Around lvl160 was when we got a pretty big boost in damage and when we started to do our 1000 quest for the quest rings.
This was also the stage when we started to dabble in chaos scrolling.
As for gear before sweetwater, this is what my group of friends and I did.
Helm: Chaos scarga/targa helm scrolled with 60%
Overall: Crafted timeless overall scrolled with 60%
Gloves: Crafted timeless gloves scrolled with 60% (If you land 12/15 att on lvls, you can choose to perfect them with 15%)
Weapon: Crafted timeless weapon scrolled with 60%
Cape: same as capes above unless you're super rich and you can afford the timeless cape
Shoes: Facestompers for me since I got lucky with csing, but if broke just use crappy ones until sweetwater shoes
Pendant: CHTP +3 scrolled bought for like 5-8ws (can use free Mark of Naricain from cwkpq in the meantime)
Earring: Rex's Earring chaos scrolled
Belt: Black belt from dojo clean -> you trade this in for sweetwater belt
Rings: Diligent Ring chaosed from PQs, Questing rings (follow the 1000 quest guide in the guide section)

For bossing:
You guys can probably do zakum at your level. It'll take sometime, but zakums easier than expected. Krexel is also another boss you guys can do as well as chaos pap. CWKPQ is pretty easy too so you can probably comfortably do it maybe? My group of friends and I did all these and chaos zak, HT, reg/chaos scarga as a 5/6 man with just timeless gear. Honestly we were overgeared and leveled for most of the bossing so it was easy, so I'd say if you don't know just yolo run one.
Honestly, something we didn't do but should've was run CWKPQ sooner. It's not difficult, it's a great source of CS/WS, Gelt, Naricain Elixers, and Swiss Cheese for free which we use during bossing.
